Obesity is a disease that has different stages and can vary from person to person. It usually progresses with a body mass index above 30 in patients. With the effect of eating habits, patients may face many physiological problems. Not only weight gain, but also other weight-related diseases can accompany obesity. Surgical interventions in the more advanced stages of obesity are also not sufficient. Surgical procedures such as gastric bypass or gastric banding are among the functional methods of losing a large part of the weight of the patients. However, patients with a body mass index above 50, for which these are insufficient, need different surgical methods. SADI-S surgery is an effective surgery at this point.
You can reach detailed information about SADI-S surgery by following the following headings:

What is SADI-S Surgery?
Sadi-s, one of the metabolic surgery methods, is applied in patients with other diseases accompanying obesity. One of the factors in the emergence of other diseases is a higher body mass index. Metabolic surgery methods can be applied in obesity patients with this index above 50.
In which situations and for whom is SADI-S surgery suitable?
Sadi-s is a surgical intervention applied to patients who have diabetes, sleep problems and blood pressure problems along with obesity. However, if the patient has chronic diseases with vitamin deficiencies, this surgery is avoided. Especially in diseases such as anemia, sadi-s isn't an applied method. In addition, patients with obesity between 30-49 will not be suitable for this method if they do not have other diseases. In addition, it should be ensured that the patient who will undergo surgery does not have habits related to alcohol or substance use.
How is SADI-S Surgery Performed?
Sadi-s surgery, which is similar to gastric bypass surgery, is an operation that involves the removal of the intestine connected to the stomach and the aim of direct absorption processes. The implementation steps are as follows:
- First, the patient's suitability for surgery is checked. Then the surgical process is started.
- General anesthesia is applied to the patient before starting the operation.
- With the laparoscopic method, in the first stage, the abdomen is entered and the stomach is released by means of special instruments and a camera closed. It is separated from the surrounding layer.
- Then, the upper part of the stomach and the lower part that connects with the small intestine are held. The other part is taken. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, a portion of the stomach is removed.
- The point where the stomach meets the small intestine is cut. The point determined in the large intestine is directly connected to the stomach.
- In this way, bile and pancreatic enzymes in the small intestine are enabled to enter the circulation more intensively.
What is the Post-SADI-S Process?
The reason for applying Sadi-s surgery is that obesity is at an advanced point and is accompanied by different diseases. In the next process, the targeted patient is to lose weight and to eliminate other diseases such as diabetes. Especially with the removal of the absorption process in the small intestine, the patient's weight gain process will decrease with less absorption, and thus he will be able to reach the targeted point quickly.
Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the patient's stomach will be tubular, and the amount of food taken will decrease. The feeling of satiety will reach the brain quickly and the patient's eating habits will change. Under the control of a dietitian and doctor, the patient should make many adjustments in his diet after the surgery. He does not suddenly switch to solid foods, but gradually regulates his nutrition. With this process, a positive change in the course of the diseases he experiences and an increase in the rate of weight loss are expected to be observed. After the operation, the patient is kept under observation for 3 to 5 days. Depending on the patient's condition, he can return to work from the 10th day.
What are the risks of SADI-S surgery?
Sadi-s surgery is a difficult operation to decide on and to perform, as it involves more surgical intervention. It is necessary to know what your lifestyle will be like after surgery and to change your eating habits. There should be no such thing as eating too much or not following a diet. When you pay attention to these and comply with the process, you will reduce the possible risks. Among the risks of Sadi-s, the following can be said:
- Infection
- Intestinal perforation
- Intestinal obstruction
- Abscess formation
- Bile reflux
- Leakage in the anastomosis (at the junction of the large intestine and stomach with surgery)
