Porcelain laminate veneers, shortly ‘veneers’, are special type of dental restorations which are very thin compared to the conventional crowns. Therefore they are very affectively used when the correction of the shape, color and alignment of teeth is planned.
Detailed information about porcelain veneers will be given under the following headings:

For which patients are veneers applicable?
Porcelain veneers are mainly performed to create an esthetic smile in patients with mild to moderate irregularities (eg.crowdness, discoloration, diastemas) There’s no age limit for the treatment. As the porcalain veneers adhere to the enamel, they can not be applied to teeth with severe tooth structure loss.
Why is Veneers Preferred?
Porcelain veneers are attached to teeth by means of an adhesive retention. As a result of this strong attachment, patients are able to bite and chew safely. A very minor or sometimes no- preparation on teeth is needed to place porcelain veneers. Therefore, veneers are considered both conservative and very esthetic. One important advantage of veneers is the ease of maintaining the oral hygiene.
What are the Veneers Application Steps?
Porcelain veneer application steps are as follows:
- An impression is taken to prepare a custom model for the restorations (mock-up) and later this model is placed over the teeth in order to evaluate the dimensions and shape of the the planned veneers.
- Teeth are anesthetized locally and preparations are completed painlessly and impression is taken digitally.
- Afterwards, veneers are prepared in the lab by an expert technician.
- Porcelain veneers are placed on the teeth and after all the necessary controls and corrections they are fixed by special adhesive materials.
What are the side effects of veneers?
Porcelain veneers are attached on the frontal side of the teeth, therefore they don’t cause any gum disturbance. They have no known side effects.
How long is the porcelain veneer used?
Porcelain is a very durable and long-lasting material. Under the right application conditions, the veneers can be used for an average of 15-20 years. However, this period may vary individually and also depends on the care of the crown. For example, the life of the crown may be shortened if it is constantly overloaded by bad habits, like bruxing and clenching. Therefore, it is recommended that you and your doctor decide the right treatment for your teeth.
Can veneers be applied to all teeth?
Porcelain veneer can be applied to teeth with intact enamel. Also they are not advised if there is severe crowdness or discoloring. In these conditions porcelain crowns should be the treatment of choice.
