What Is a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?

A breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure that raises, reshapes, and firms sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple-areola complex to a more youthful, forward-facing position. Unlike breast augmentation, mastopexy does not add volume — it restores shape and lift using the existing breast tissue.

At FitAndFit Clinic, mastopexy is performed by experienced plastic surgeons under general anaesthesia. The procedure typically takes 2–3 hours and requires a hospital stay of 1 night.

Why Does Breast Ptosis (Sagging) Occur?

Breast ptosis is a natural consequence of several factors that stretch the Cooper's ligaments and skin envelope of the breast:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Significant weight loss
  • Ageing and gravity
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Large cup size over time

Mastopexy Techniques

The appropriate technique depends on the degree of ptosis and the amount of excess skin:

  • Crescent lift: For mild ptosis; a small crescent of skin is removed above the areola. Minimal scarring.
  • Periareolar (Benelli) lift: For mild to moderate ptosis; incision follows the edge of the areola.
  • Vertical (lollipop) lift: For moderate ptosis; incision around the areola and straight down to the fold.
  • Anchor (inverted-T) lift: For severe ptosis with significant excess skin; provides the most dramatic reshaping. Most commonly used technique.

Breast Lift Combined with Augmentation

Many patients opt for breast lift with implants (augmentation mastopexy) to simultaneously restore shape and add volume. This combination is particularly popular with mothers who have experienced both ptosis and volume loss following pregnancy and breastfeeding. Our surgeons assess whether a combined or staged approach is safer and more appropriate for your individual anatomy.

Recovery After Mastopexy

Patients are typically discharged the morning after surgery. A supportive surgical bra is worn continuously for 4–6 weeks. Return to sedentary work is possible within 7–10 days; upper body exercise is avoided for 4–6 weeks. Scars fade progressively over 12–18 months.
