What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown (dental cap) is a tooth-shaped restoration that fully encases a damaged, decayed, root-canal-treated, or structurally weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Modern crowns are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth and can last 15–25 years with proper care.
Types of Dental Crowns at FitAndFit Clinic
- Zirconia crowns: The most popular choice. Zirconia (zirconium dioxide) is an extremely strong, tooth-coloured ceramic that combines the strength of metal with the aesthetics of porcelain — making it ideal for both front and back teeth. No dark metal margin at the gum line.
- E.max (lithium disilicate) crowns: Ultra-thin, highly translucent ceramic for anterior (front) teeth. Exceptional aesthetics for smile makeovers; slightly less strong than zirconia but extremely lifelike.
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): Traditional option; strong but may show a metal margin over time as the gum recedes. Less commonly chosen today in favour of full-ceramic alternatives.
When Is a Crown Needed?
- After root canal treatment (to protect the weakened tooth)
- Large decay that cannot be restored with a filling
- A cracked, fractured, or broken tooth
- Severe tooth wear (bruxism)
- To improve the appearance of a misshapen or discoloured tooth
- As the final restoration over a dental implant
Dental Crown Procedure
Crown treatment is completed in 2–3 appointments. At the first appointment, the tooth is prepared by removing a thin layer of enamel, impressions are taken, and a temporary crown is placed. The permanent crown is fabricated by our in-house dental laboratory and fitted at the second appointment. For international patients, we offer an accelerated 3–5 day programme that completes crown work during your stay.
