What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) is the world's most performed bariatric procedure. Approximately 75–80% of the stomach is removed laparoscopically, leaving a sleeve-shaped stomach roughly the size of a banana. This dramatically reduces food intake, lowers hunger hormones and leads to significant, sustainable weight loss — typically 60–70% of excess body weight within 12–18 months.
Who is a Candidate?
- BMI ≥ 35 with obesity-related conditions (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea)
- BMI ≥ 40 without comorbidities
- Previous weight loss attempts with diet and exercise alone
- Commitment to long-term lifestyle changes
The Procedure
Gastric sleeve is performed laparoscopically under general anaesthesia in approximately 60–90 minutes. Four to five small incisions allow the surgeon to insert a camera and instruments. The resected stomach is removed, and the remaining sleeve is sealed with surgical staples. Hospital stay is typically 2–3 nights.
Health Benefits Beyond Weight Loss
Many patients experience remission or significant improvement of obesity-related conditions including type 2 diabetes (60–80% remission rate), hypertension, sleep apnoea and joint pain — often within weeks of surgery.
